"Primaries" oil on canvas

This is a still life I did over the summer mainly because

a) I wanted to use a square canvas

b) I have trouble painting glass and fabric

c) Felt like using a limited palette

As I am an exceedingly slow painter, I went through about three rounds of fruit during the process. For some reason, the image turned out less saturated than the actually painting.

I forgot about this piece. It was my final for Fundamentals of Illustration. The project was to illustrate something after a metaphorical poem. I chose "Hope is a Thing with Feathers" by Emily Dickinson.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I don't think it's too shabby for something I finished the night before it was due (first all nighter in awhile, actually)... although in retrospect the face could use more definition.

Still lifes

I did a lot of still lifes during school for my fundamentals of painting class. Good practice with different shapes and textures. The first is a quick sort-of alla prima (well, two sittings) I did for my grandmother. My parents decided to take a trip back to Thailand so this was a last minute gift for my grandma. It's very pink, fruity, and flowery. Very grandmother-friendly if I do say so myself! The last two are both from the painting class I took last semester.

Half empty sketchbooks

I am so bad at keeping a sketchbook. It's terrible. I guess I was okay at it in high school, but the ironic thing is that the more I get involved in being an art student, the less I use my sketchbook. I don't know if it's just my personality to hate leaving things unfinished or what... but for whatever reason, I just can't bring myself to let go and just draw and not care what the finished product looks like. I also need to post more... there's a pile of recent work under my bed that has yet to be photographed. I guess I'm also bad at blogging!

The tattoo fund

So wow... I entered "Dali (Distorted Portrait)" in the annual LCAD student show hosted by the Pacific Arts foundation and somehow managed to place in "Best of Foundation". Pretty neat, I think... however, judging is a matter of personal taste and there were some other works that I thought were going to win for sure (ie: an amazing interpretation/rendering of Heath Ledger's "the Joker"). Anyway... the prize money was $100... not much compared to most awards I suppose, but free money nonetheless :D So I'm doing what any self respecting first year college student would do... take it and stick it in the tattoo fund. I stopped by Outer Limits tattoo last week to make an appointment and the estimate came to be anywhere from $200-$300... The tattoo I designed is slightly larger than a baseball and will go on my left shoulder blade. With any luck, it won't be too unbearably painful...
